Just as a reminder to everyone, the city's new compostable bag program for leaves and grass clippings went into effect on Monday, April 5th, 2010. The first date this will apply to Spring Oaks residents will be Friday, April 9th, 2010. According to the Houston Chronicle ( http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/facebook/6947262.html ), to allow residents to adjust to the new program, there will be a two week grace period during which the city will collect regular plastic bags filled with yard waste the day after the usual pickup day. To remind residents of the compostable bag program, city workers are affixing notices on plastic bags filled with yard waste. After the grace period ends, the city will not collect yard waste in standard plastic bags. Under the new ordinance, residents face penalties of up to $2,000 for putting leaves and clippings in garbage containers other than the approved compostable bags. The first collection date after the grace period for Spring Oaks residents will be Friday, April 23rd, 2010. Low-cost, sustainable alternatives to the compostable bag program include mulching of yard materials or composting. Alan Grissett Last changed: Apr 09 2010 at 4:31 AM BackCommentsAdd Comment |
